Joan Rackey
Joan Rackey has served as the Music Director of the Greenbelt Concert Band since 2016, guiding the ensemble with artistry, dedication, and a deep love of community music-making. A lifelong educator and conductor, Joan taught instrumental music in Montgomery County Public Schools for 41 years, directing concert bands, marching bands, jazz ensembles, orchestras, guitar and piano classes, as well as the International Baccalaureate Music program.
Throughout her teaching and conducting career, Joan has inspired countless musicians through her passion for music and commitment to excellence. Under her leadership, the Greenbelt Concert Band has continued to thrive, performing an engaging variety of programs—from patriotic celebrations and holiday performances to movie themes, Broadway favorites, and classical masterworks—always with a spirit of inclusiveness and joy.
Beyond the podium, Joan fosters a welcoming environment where musicians of all ages and backgrounds can learn, grow, and share their love of music. Her vision and steady leadership have strengthened the band’s connection to the City of Greenbelt and ensured that live music remains a vibrant and cherished part of the community’s cultural life.
